Information on our No Sponsporship Policy Project

What is sponsorship?
The donation of money, services, or in-kind giving in exchage for recognition of the donation.

Types of Sponsorship
  • Corporate Giving Sponsorship - funds donated to an organization utilizing the givers corporate name.
  • Commercial Sponsorship - promotes sponsoring company's bran name (ex. Nascar Winston Cup)

The problem with Sponsorship
  • Commercial sponsorship and corporate giving are friendlier ways to promote a deadly and addictive product
  • Tobacco Sponsorship buys silence.
  • Tobacco industry preys on vulnerable and underfunded causes, inclusive of groups with high smoking rates.  (Under-funded causes such as HIV/AIDS research and inclusive groups such as the LGBT community.)

Sponsorship's Impact on Youth
  • Goal: To sell brand image, buy influence, and sway behavior
  • Tobacco sponsorship has the same effect on kids as traditional tobacco advertising (Cornwell, 1998)
  • About 1/3 of youth experimentation with smoking results directly from tobacco advertising and promotion (Pierce, et al, 1998)

Our Objectives
  • Raise Awareness of Industry Action
  • Increase Education
  • Expose Tobacco Industry attempts to secure public acceptance
  • Change Norms - De-Normalize Tobacco (Imagery, influence)
  • Protect health and well-being of residents

With Policy Adoption We Can...
  • Influence current and future usuage patterns in our communities
  • Create an environment and infrastructure where tobacco is unacceptable
  • SAVE LIVES!
